Back to Class

This was my first week back in class after a month (!!) off for winter break. Because of the knee surgery I had last week, I had to drop the two kitchen lab classes I had been enrolled in (Baking & Pastry and American Regional) which means I’m now in class only 2 days a week, 3 hours a day. Needless to say, I wasn’t very happy about having to drop my classes; I love baking and was really looking forward to taking that with the other people in my little culinary cohort.

Anyway, I am taking a costing class and management by menu. One of the first things my instructor said in my costing class was, “I hope you all like math because there is lots of math in this class.” Math is not my thing, like at all. I can do it, I just don’t like it. As soon as I heard about all the math in this class, I promptly texted my friend Mary (otherwise known as my Oversharing BFF) and being the awesome friend she is, she promptly calmed me down.

See? Rockstar. And she’s right, it basically is just adding/subtracting, multiplying/dividing. Definitely not calculus. Phew.

As well as all the math that comes along with that class, I do get to spend time developing/creating recipes and menus, which I’m super excited about. I have to check with the head of the department to see if I can share the recipes with you, but if I can I promise you’ll see them soon. I will, however, be able to share with you the recipes I’ve created for The Oregonian 🙂

My management by menu class is basically what it sounds like. We make different kinds of menus for our potential future restaurants. This is a chance for us to get a little creative and think about what we want to once we’ve completed culinary school.

My friend Taylor and I went to the Blazer game last night. Let me tell you, getting around the Rose Garden (I still can’t call it the Moda Center) is not easy on crutches. It does, however, get you lots of sympathetic looks, questions, a few comparisons to Greg Oden and kind ushers asking if you want your picture taken next to the court (um, yes!). Crutches also make excellent noisemakers for when the other team is shooting free throws, in case you were wondering 🙂

I have a recipe to share with you all later this week/weekend, so stay tuned for that!
